While the full reveals of Weapon X (character) and Maverick along two new affiliated TTCs are the center of attention (more on those further below), AMG has taken an untypically harsh and not in any way made public swing at the Weapon X leadership in the rules forum.
What changed is that, now you can’t place memory tokens on the leader when s/he is dazed. Making an already convoluted and not really impressive leadership even worse. Especially in combination with the (deserved) downgrade from X-Ceptional to Instant Recovery.
For anyone wondering this isn’t a case of “that’s always been the case actually and everyone just did it wrong” the post specifically calls put that the ruling on this issue has changed.
I typically trust AMG fully with their decisions but this has my scratching me head. It’s a problem that could’ve easily be avoided with a little change of the wording on the card to say you place the memory tokens on the card and not the character like, I would assume, every WX player already did anyway. Problem solved and leadership not unnecessarily nerfed…

Now with that downer out of the way let’s see what WX gets in their new pack to make up for the loss.
So we finally know the backside of Logan 3 and it’s… interesting. He loses his additional dice when on a secure but changes the Gainer to A2. I’m personally not convinced it’s a good trade. I envision Weapon X as a 3 threat heat seeking missile that dives your opponents back points and kills whatever sits there, surviving the counter punch hopefully with his HF3. He can’t really take any sort of focus fire from multiple models so I don’t think A2 will really help him play his role. I’m happy to be wrong about this though.
Generally I see him as an interesting character outside of WX (the affiliation, good that that is not annoying to have to clarify every time now) but not really worth the loss of Logan in affiliation. He can be given the leadership but I find it highly unlikely that you’d want that. Especially with the ruling from above.
B- in the right affis (Thanos Cabal might be interesting for example). C- in affi.
So nothing changes for Maverick on the backside making him just a generally cool and useful 3 threat. Very splashable and at least OK in WX although he has to fight against DP, Domino and Laura for a 3 threat slot and that is extremely hard competition. Oh and technically also WX (the character) but as seen above I don’t think he really makes a WX (affi) roster…
Maverick I would put as a solid B both in and out of affiliation.
Wow. This card is really bad. Well at least it counts Crits, Wilds and Hits which is a dice result more than the usual Trap and Counter Attack effects but it costs a TTC slot when you already have to give one up for your mediocre leadership and also two power and can damage your character for up to 4 damage if you’re really unlucky. At least it can also only be played by affiliated models… Yeah I don’t know. C-maybe?
This is a cool card. Would have been nice if it would be unaffiliated but it at least give a small reason to pick WX over X-Force sometimes maybe? Giving cover is great and then additional dice for when you really need them is also not nothing. Given the card crunch of WX with the locks of leadership, Instant Recovery and Dossier with probably Brace also always in you’d have to decide between this and your second restricted most likely it feels a lot less great honestly. Definitely something you’d put in your 10 if you do run Maverick in your WX roster but probably not something you’d bring every game you bring him.
Let’s hope I’m completely wrong and these two characters and cards lift the affiliation up a bunch and the nerf to the leadership doesn’t really affect them in the end. As always I’m happy to be wrong about everything here.
Cheers from Germany 🍻
