Early Evening Dads Part 2: The Numbering!

All right, we have 36 characters all lined up.  No problem right?  I just throw darts at a board?  That’s what I used to do…

What is an effective way to select characters?  There are lots of opinions on this.  I’ve got the flavoring down.  I want to be scenario focused.  In Marvel: Crisis Protocol, that also means I need to stand on points and survive while wearing my opponents down.  After flavor, I think there are lots of ways to go.

I’ve decided that, for my first iteration, I am going to figure out what combinations of points I want at what levels and go from there to make sure my list has the applicable choices of how to get there.  In the past I have hit those awkward levels where it’s like “Man, if I want to be in faction, I have to take these four characters and nothing else” which is not ideal.  I am considering at least one 6 point character so I want to see what that looks like.  Voodoo is clearly a big reason to play the faction so having two 4’s is going to be common.  I have a four point leader so here’s my chart:

14 Points: 4, 4, 3, 3 – 4, 5, 3, 2 – 4, 6, 4 – 4, 5, 5 – 4, 3, 3, 2, 2  (If I want to play 5 wide on 14 it’s two 2’s?)

15 Points: 4, 5, 6 – 4, 5, 3, 3 – 4, 4, 4, 3 – 4, 4, 5, 2 – 4, 3, 3, 3, 2 (If I want to play 5 wide I need three 3’s)

16 Points: 4, 4, 5, 3 – 4, 4, 6, 2 – 4, 4, 3, 3, 2 – 4, 3, 6, 3 – 4, 3, 3, 3, 3 – 4, 5, 5, 2

17 Points: 4, 5, 4, 4 – 4, 6, 4, 3 – 4, 5, 3, 3, 2 – 4, 4, 3, 3, 3 – 4, 5, 5, 3 – 4, 4, 4, 3, 2 (Do I want 3 different four costers?  17 gets awkward if I don’t unless I go with a 6 pointer or go 5 wide)

18 Points: 4, 6, 4, 4 – 4, 6, 5, 3 – 4, 5, 5, 4 – 4, 6, 3, 3, 2 – 4, 4, 4, 3, 3 – 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 2 (6 wide I need 4 threes, is that good?)

19 Points: 4, 6, 5, 4 – 4, 5, 5, 3, 2 – 4, 5, 4, 3, 3 – 4, 3, 3, 3, 3, 3 (Do I need 5 3’s?)

20 Points: 4, 6, 5, 5 – 4, 6, 4, 3, 3 – 4, 4, 3, 3, 3, 3 (Is four 3’s the sweet spot?)

There are obviously more combinations than this.  As you ramp up in points it becomes almost endless.  So what did this exercise teach me?

  1. If I want to go 5 wide at 14, I need two models at two cost.  I don’t think I *need* to go 5 wide.  Blade, Voodoo, Black Cat and a 3 cost of choice are probably real good on Senators.  That’s the only 14 I will be forced to play since I want to choose secures most of the time.
  2. If I want to go 5 wide at 15, I need three models of three cost and one of two cost.  This is probably easier than number 1.  Will keep this in the tank.  Do I want a two coster?  That’s a question for the end.
  3. Do I want three different four cost models?  I have two already.  There are some really good models at that point range.  It’s probably the most competitive point range for models.  It’s a third of the models I segregated as acceptable.  High possibility I should do this.  It wasn’t even on my radar.  Is Blade, Voodoo, Strange and a 4 of choice a good 17?
  4. Do I need four different models that cost three?  Do I need 5? Black Cat, Iron Fist and Moon Knight are all good.  Four three’s kept popping up for me in the matrix I built.
  5. Do I need two different five cost models?  Looking at the matrix above, I am not sure any of the teams with two different five cost models are stronger than what else is there.
  6. Lots of four wide up there which means only one out of faction model unless I use a rogue agent.

So what’s the synopsis?  Here’s what I am looking at point wise – 4, 4, 4, 5, 6, 3, 3, 3, 3, 2(?)

Next time I will get into filling these roles and choosing my team!  In the meantime, feel free to comment below and leave your thoughts.
